Career Interests:

It was during a field trip to Florida for a field ecology class that I used binoculars for the first time and suddenly realized my interest in birds.  I subsequently changed the course of my academic studies and pursued seasonal jobs as a field technician after graduation.  I spent three summers working with black-throated blue warblers in the white mountains of New Hampshire, a winter in Jamaica working with American redstarts and a fall in New Brunswick banding south-bound migrants.

I first came to San Clemente Island to work on the shrike monitoring crew for the 2010 breeding season.  In 2011, I was promoted to Crew Leader for the newly merged Shrike Monitoring and Release projects.  My current responsibilities include overseeing the year-round monitoring of the wild shrike population and the release of captive-reared birds into the wild.  My research interests in the project pertain to natal and breeding dispersal as well as the expansion of breeding territories into previously unoccupied habitat.  I truly enjoy the daily challenges of working in the rugged island environment and on a dynamic Navy range.  Beyond working with shrikes, I have had the opportunity to work with breeding peregrine falcons and Western snowy plovers on San Clemente Island.

Since moving to southern California I have become a total ebird addict and spend most of my free time on SCI birding, which creates the illusion that I’m working all the time, though it feels more to me like I’m never really working.
