Research/Career Interests
I formed the Institute for Wildlife Studies in 1979 while an undergraduate at Humboldt State University as a way to help fund the reintroduction of bald eagles to the California Channel Islands. While much of my early conservation research focused on birds of prey, I had the opportunity to work on a variety of other species and on topics such as invasive species control. My conservation interests also have taken me to a variety of project locations around the world, including Russia, Japan, Swaziland, Guam, and the Northern Mariana Islands.
My primary focus is in working with other staff and collaborators to develop new conservation and research projects. I also enjoy working to adapt existing technology into novel applications for wildlife management. In addition to running the Institute, I am currently involved in conducting research on mountain lions in three regions of California, working with collaborators to reestablish a population of wolverines in the Sierra Nevada, and studying pronghorn demography in northeastern California.
